MANILA — The Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) formally ushered in new leadership as Rebecca “Beck” Madeja Velasquez assumed office as President in a turnover ceremony highlighted by the symbolic passing of responsibilities from outgoing President Nelson Santos.
Santos, who completed his term as PAPI President, was appointed as the organization’s Chairman for Media Affairs, a role that recognizes his continued influence and leadership in the media industry. The transition marks both continuity and renewal within PAPI, as it strengthens its advocacy for press freedom and ethical journalism nationwide.
In her acceptance message, Velasquez expressed deep gratitude to the members for their trust, pledging to lead PAPI with integrity, unity, and vision. She vowed to further the organization’s mission of defending press freedom, promoting ethical standards, and empowering community publishers across the country.
The event was attended by officers and members, who emphasized the importance of collaboration amid today’s evolving challenges in journalism — from combating misinformation to embracing digital transformation.
The turnover ceremony stands as a milestone for PAPI, as leadership passes into new hands while preserving the legacy of service and advocacy established by past leaders. With Velasquez at the helm and Santos in his new role, PAPI enters a new chapter anchored in unity, accountability, and commitment to the vital role of the press in nation-building.— Jian Carl Castillo / G.I.E.C.E.L AN-PAPI VP-VISAYAS
