The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) welcomes the court’s decision in the case involving the killing of journalist Eduardo “Ed” Dizon as a crucial milestone in the pursuit of justice
for his family and the ongoing battle against impunity.
On Tuesday, 6 October 2026, the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 228 rendered its judgment, finding accused Junell Jane Andagkit Poten, the alleged gunman, and Dante Encarnacion Tabusares, the alleged mastermind, guilty of murder. Both have been sentenced to reclusion perpetua, underscoring the seriousness of their crimes.
Eduardo “Ed” Dizon was a broadcaster for Brigada News FM. He was shot dead on July 10, 2019, in Kidapawan City while driving home after his radio program. His reporting often criticized local
corruption, making him a target for those who sought to silence the truth.
We stand with his family and colleagues, whose unwavering determination has kept the call for justice alive through years of grief and uncertainty. While no court decision can restore the life that was lost, holding perpetrators accountable is essential in honoring Ed’s memory and safeguarding those who continue his work.
PTFOMS acknowledges the significant contributions of the prosecutors, investigators, and partner agencies involved in this case, including the Department of Justice, the Philippine National Police, and the National Bureau of Investigation. We also commend the courage of the witnesses who bravely came forward, recognizing that their continued protection is vital to the pursuit of justice.
This development highlights the importance of sustained investigation, diligent prosecution, witness protection, and inter-agency collaboration, all while respecting judicial independence and due process.
PTFOMS pledges to continue monitoring developments in this case and to maintain close coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure accountability under the law. We remain equally dedicated to advancing other unresolved cases involving attacks on journalists and media workers.
Our responsibility extends beyond addressing past violence. It includes preventing future threats, responding promptly to risks, and ensuring that journalists can report freely without fear. No journalist should lose their life in service to the public, and every attack on the press demands a robust and comprehensive response. Every family seeking justice deserves sustained attention and dedicated action. (PTFOMS)
